Physical Wellness
Now that we know what general wellness is, let's talk a little bit about Physical Wellness.
What comes to mind when you hear 'Physical Wellness'?
Do you know what it means or you automatically just picture a ripped guy or a really toned babe?
When asked the question, "What comes to mind when you hear Physical Wellness", the general population will respond with fitness. This is a very common misconception, however, Physical Wellness is more than just fitness.
Physical Wellness is the process of taking care of your body in order to achieve optimum health. It is a balance between physical activity and nutrition.
Physical activity plays an important role in keeping your body in excellent condition. Also, it is important to nurture your body by eating healthily which helps your body to function properly. Both physical activity and nutrition provide an added benefit of preventing illness; who wouldn't want that?
In case you did not know, there is a relationship between physical and mental health. As stated in the previous post, The 8 dimensions of Wellness are inter-related. Improving your level of physical wellness improves your overall emotional wellness. Not only will you sharpen your mind, your self-esteem and self-control will be enhanced. Physical wellness enables you to link how your body functions physically with how you feel mentally.
So, if Physical Wellness is a balance between physical activity and nutrition, where do fitness and/or exercise come in?
There is a general tendency to think physical activity is exercise and/or fitness, when in fact, there is a difference. I don't blame you for thinking that way, even I had the same thought; I mean, the media isn't exactly clear, everyone is just trying to sell the 'fit fam' idea.
Let's poke a hole in our thought pattern, check back to learn the difference between physical activity, fitness and exercise.
